THE SEMINOLE
Climate/Environment
The Seminole lived in the swamp and wetlands of southern Florida called the Everglades. The climate of the southern Florida where the Seminoles resided was hot, humid, and rainy and had lots of fog. Temperatures were often hot in the summer and warm in the winter.
Food
The Seminole had a large selection of food. They would hunt bear, deer, rabbit, squirrel, and all kinds of different birds. They also ate fish, turtles, oysters, and berries and nuts. The Seminoles were also farmers and would grow many crops such as sweet potatoes, corn, pumpkins, and melons.
Clothing
The Seminole dressed for the swamp environment. They wore leggings, and clothes made from animal skin to keep mosquitos and other pests away. Their clothing was often determined by the temperature. In the summer men would wear breechclothes. In the winter they would wear leggings.. Sometimes they would wear shirts made from patchwork and add beads. Women would wear wrap around skirts with a shawl. Some small children would not wear clothes.
Shelter
The Seminoles built a shelter that was a raised platform with a roof and open sides. The shelter was called a Chickee. The roof was made from palm leaves and the sides were left open so air could flow through during the hot summers. The platform was built to be raised so that animals would stay out of it.
Transportation
The Seminole built dug-out canoes by hollowing out large cedar logs. They would use long sticks to direct the travel of their dug-out canoe. They also used animal paths as a means of travel.
Beliefs
Every summer the Seminole would hold a Green Corn Festival to celebrate the ripened corn and honor the Corn Goddess. This ceremony took place during the full moon after the corn had ripened.
The women wore necklaces. They got a new beaded necklace each year until they were 40. After they turned 40 they would remove 1 necklace each year. Women did not go anywhere without their necklaces on.
Major Resources
Corn was a major resource for the Seminole of the Everglades.. They believed the Corn Mother was the Goddess of Farming.
