JUAN PONCE DE LEON

Ponce de Leon's Motivations: Ponce de Leon became interested in sailing from his cousin, Christopher Columbus. After the war against the Muslims ended, Ponce de Leon was looking for gold and adventure. He set sail with Columbus on his second expedition.
Expedition: Ponce de Leon set sail September 24, 1493. Ponce de Leon sailed to the Dominican Republic. While in the Dominican Republic he fought with his cousin and decided to stay behind when Columbus sailed back to Spain. Ponce de Leon came down with a rare disease and suffered the loss of his right hand. He became governor of a small province called Higuey.
Puerto Rico: Ponce de Leon was told there was gold in the island of Borinquen, which is present day Puerto Rico. Ponce set sail in 1508. While in Puerto Rico, Ponce de Leon was appointed governor and fought to claim the island for Spain. Ponce de Leon put the natives to work, growing crops and mining for gold. He was very abusive to the natives. The natives tried to rebel against Ponce de Leon, but they were unsuccessful.
Florida: King Ferdinand sent Ponce de Leon to look for undiscovered islands northwest of the Dominican Republic. Ponce de Leon set sail from Puerto Rico on March 4, 1513. Ponce de Leon hoped to rule these undiscovered lands and also find the "Fountain of Youth". Ponce de Leon landed in St Augustine, Florida and claimed the land for Spain.
Golf Stream: On Ponce de Leon's next voyage he stumbled upon a warm current known today as the Golf Stream. The Gold Stream flows out of the Gulf of Mexico. This current is extremely important to sailors and help European's travel from Europe to America.
Return to Florida: When Ponce de Leon returned to Florida he found the natives were rebelling against the colonists. Ponce de Leon fought many battles against the natives, who refused to accept Spanish rule. In Ponce de Leon's final battle he was struck by an arrow, became very ill and died.
